This acrylic painting on canvas, called ‘Beacon’, is by the artist named James Guppy. It is a painting from the surreal movement. The picture plane consists of a dark sky full of heavy low clouds and a turbulent sea underneath. There are three small sailing boats on the sea in the foreground of the painting, sliding side ways because of the violent ocean. Small people can be seen on the small boats. The subject mater of this painting is the red, vibrant rose in the centre of the painting. There is a light coming through some gaps in the clouds however these are faint. Through this light the island and the light house is slightly visible. The mood of this piece is tumultuous caused by the rough ocean waves and the dark clouds formed in the sky.
Analysing this painting using the elements of art and the principles, it can be said that many elements and principles of art can be identified. Tone is used dominantly in this painting to create mood. The dark tones on the red rose cause a more sombre and deep feeling and also the tones used to create the dark ocean builds a more dangerous and serious atmosphere. Directional line is used in this painting to shows the direction of the rough waves and the beautiful but frightening rose petals that are curling outwards. Organic lines are used more frequently in this painting. The colour theme used in this image is slightly analogous and it uses expressive colours; this is represented by the dark red rose. The rose expresses the mood of deep emotion such as love. Both warm and cool colours are used in this painting; red- warm, blue-cold. One of the principles used in this painting is scale. As this painting is from the surreal movement the artist uses scale, the rose is much bigger than its normal size and is nearly as big as the ocean. Compared to the rose, the island and the sailing boats are miniature. Another principle used in this image is emphasis, the juxtaposition and scale of the rose cause draws the attention on to the rose. The movement in this image is the turbulent ocean; it creates a huge movement using diagonals lines to attract the audience to the focal point, which is the big rose.
Interpreting this painting, it can be said that this image is metaphorical. The rose could represent the strong emotion love and the large and dark ocean could represent a turbulent mind, a mind that is going through troubles that are causing the inner self to suffer and be rocked, as in the boats, in the violent wave of emotions. The boats could represent an unstable emotion or material subject such as fear or family. However the rose is dominating the mind as the artist has represented, using scale, emphasis and juxtaposition, suggesting that even in this time of turbulence of mind where many emotions and feelings are rocked, love still stays strong and is the central part of the person’s emotional life. This is greatly supported by the title of the painting, Beacon. It is saying that the rose, love, is the beacon of hope amongst the other troubles in the mind. There is also an island at the back of the painting indicating that there is hope, the boats will soon reach the island as the light is shining on it.
